I was thinking to myself today that while a Friday is a pretty good thing during the work week, what would be better? This morphed in to if I could be anywhere doing anything right now, what would it be?
My first impression was at the top of a mountain sitting on the porch of a warm cabin looking out over the valley. I have a big bowl of thick beef stew and fresh bread. I’m wearing a flannel shirt, jeans and cozy socks. While it is only 3:00 in the afternoon, the sun will soon dip behind the western peaks. But I have a stack of wood and a big stone fireplace inside. Amazingly I also have broadband internet and satellite TV. Some football is on tonight and I have a batch of nachos waiting for it. Sometime during the early evening it will begin snowing, but by about 11:00 it will have stopped and become clear. After the game I can shrug on my heavy coat and stand outside to marvel at the sparkling snow. All the mountains shine in the full moonlight and the stars… Oh the stars! They twinkle with such beauty that your smile squeezes out tears.
When I’m too cold to stare at the sky any more, I’ll head inside to bed. In the morning I have eggs, toast and thick slabs of bacon. After breakfast, I’m going snow boarding with my kids. When we’re done my folks will watch them while I take Amy out for a nice skiing resort dinner and then we’ll walk and look at the small shops. Then back to the cabin for wine together by the fire.
Where would you be?
The cabin next door?
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, I have a million places I wouldn't mind being. A warm sunny beach, wondering how I'll get all the sand out of the car after the trip home... a musty town library sneaking sips of coffee from a thermos I smuggled in in my backpack while perusing the stacks... eating some kind of weird rice cake confection on the steps of a temple near Kyoto in the Fall with brilliant colors exploding in the trees... relaxing in a folding canvas chair by the lake with our little dome tent behind us, waiting on the veggies to finish heating by the fire as the sun sets in Southern Indiana... having a latte and some coffee cake with a friend in New England on a bright, crisp afternoon...
But I guess I can settle for a Spring afternoon on the back porch with a glass of sweetened iced tea and a laptop.
I would be at that cabin, on the deck, sitting in the hot tub, gazing at the stars....swimming in the lake we went to last Summer, or wandering around the shops in Eureka Springs....sitting on the beach in Texas watching Meredith play in the sand and water.
ReplyDeleteAnywhere other than here.
ReplyDeleteToday I think I'm where I want to be. I coached little girls soccer this morning, T had 4 goals. I spent some time chatting with the neighbors and now there little boy and my little girl are in the next room playing starwars lego :). Got a little yard work done so, I'm feeling pretty good about that. I've got the Ipod shuffling the 1700+ songs so, who knows who's playing next. And I'm farting around on the net, checking out my bro's blog. Today sounds pretty good so far, this afternoon should be just as good. I'm going to do a little shop for Mom's day at a couple of my favorite stores and then hook back up with the soccer girls for the end of season party. I think I'll round up the day subjecting J to some Battlestar Galactica (tomorrow's moms' day after all). A pretty good day.
ReplyDeleteBut on Monday...I think I'd like to be at the lake with all the family, grand parents, siblings, nephews, nieces for a week of lazy craziness.
Sounds like you would be in Washington!
ReplyDeleteRight now I am in a pretty good place-bed. Mothers day perks-I can stay here all day if I want! But if I had to choose someplace else it would be somewhere warm- I could really use a good defrosting after this long winter and no sign of summer. Maybe in Huntington Beach wandering the shops, hanging out on the beach and then making tacos for dinner with our friends who live down there.
Oh sure... be satisfied *where you live*??? That's hardly fair. I must say, that I don't wish for much more beautiful scenery around here. Mostly I just lack the extended vacation time to really get lazy. Plus, as the weather turns here, I begin to feel like it's time for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. That makes me think of snow and skiing. But these tipsy tovy seasons have me all messed up. I had to fight off the urge to put up Halloween decorations...
